Following are such common conditions and their fixes.

Age related Macular degeneration

Macula is present in retina and allows for the formation of the sharp central vision. In AMD, the macular gets damaged and thus vision becomes blurry and distorted. Brightness and colors of the subsequent image being formed are also affected. In extreme cases, loss in the central vision also occurs.

People suffering from AMD are unable to read properly, recognize faces and driving is also off-limits for then. Unfortunately, the early signs of the disease are rather subtle, therefore most patients are caught unaware.

Fixes:

Caused majorly due to age, it is not possible to cure the disease, but it is possible to prevent the condition and also delay the progression. Lifestyle changes are responsible for increased risk. Diet rich in saturated fats, obesity and smoking leads to heightened risks of the disease. Similarly, hypertension, heart disease and family history of the disease also increase the chances of acquiring the disease.

Therefore, be sure to eat well, especially foods rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, E and omega-3 fatty acids. Adopting good lifestyle habits and exercising are also useful. Regular checkup with the best eye specialist in Lahore is also important.

Allergic Conjunctivitis

In this condition, exposure to allergens causes the outer part of the eye to become swollen and irritated. Eyes also tear more, become red and some people also experience burning in their eyes. Discharge in the eyes and puffiness of the eyelids are also some symptoms of this condition.

Fixes

It is very important first to identify your triggers. Common allergens include pollen, mold etc. Avoiding these will prevent the reaction. Moreover, antihistamine drops are available that also are effective in alleviating the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.

Dry eye Syndrome

Responsible for keeping the eye moist and debris-free, tears play a vital role in the health of the eyes. It is when we blink our eyes that the surface of the eyes is flooded with fresh tears. When we go too long without blinking, dryness haunts the eyes. This is common when we look at our screen for too long.

Dry eyes also occur due to decreased quantity and quality of tears produced by the eye.

This happens either due to the blockage of the tear glands or when eyes fail to produce sufficient tears. At times, inflammation, as in the case of Sjogren’s syndrome, leads to dry eyes as well.

Fixes

It is always a good practice to pay heed to our eyes’ health when using technology. Make sure that you cut out the excess screen time, make conscious effort at blinking, and take breaks when viewing screen for long spans of time.

If your eye has insufficient tears, artificial ones can be used as well. Application of warm compress to the eyes for five minutes, twice daily is also effective. Eye drops to stimulate the production of tears can also be done.

Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is not one particular disease but refers to the set of symptoms that appear due to excessive due to screens. Not blinking, glare on the screen, different font sizes, poor color contrast all contribute to the eye getting strained.

Symptoms of this condition include headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, muscular fatigue around the neck and shoulder, sensitivity towards light, and pressure around eyes.

Fixes

As DES is more common amongst those who use screens for more than two hours straight, it is best for people to moderate screen time and take breaks in between. Do the 20-20-20 rule; after every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds.

Also, make sure the lighting of the room is correct and if glare on the screen is incorrigible, invest in anti-glare filters. Place the screen well so that you don’t have to hunch over it.

Cataracts

It is a condition in which the lens of the eyes becomes cloudy due to protein deposition, leading to blurred vision. It develops gradually and become pronounced when the light entering the eye gets blocked. More often, it happens in older people.

Other symptoms of cataracts include nearsightedness, changed color perception, seeing double in the effected eye, problems with driving at night, sensitivity to light etc.

Fixes

Cataracts are generally treated through surgery. One intervention, phacoemulsification, uses ultrasound waves to break the lens and remove the depositions on it. Extracapsular surgery, on the other hand, involves making an incision to remove the protein deposits from the lens and placing an artificial lens in place of the damaged one.

Although the surgery is fairly simple, some people prefer other treatment methods. Your eye specialist in Lahore can help you manage your symptoms by using different eyeglasses, antiglare sunglasses etc.
